This New Year is a perfect time to dive into Rifle/Carbine Marksmanship so all of you guys and gals out there who got a brand new AR platform for Christmas, (or still haven't pulled them out of the box from when you bought them) can come out and learn how to really put them to practical and tactical use.
This New Year is a perfect time to dive into Rifle/Carbine Marksmanship so all of you guys and gals out there who got a brand new AR platform for Christmas, (or still haven't pulled them out of the box from when you bought them) can come out and learn how to really put them to practical and tactical use.
We will start with Basic Rifle Marksmanship principles and practice for Carbine Level I - you will learn about your weapon, how it operates, its performance characteristics, how to clean and maintain it so that it will function when you need it to. After you start to learn the rifle, we will put it into operation with some dry-fire exercises and a battle sight zero of both your iron sights and optics if you have them. Then we'll work on the fundamental shooting positions until you are confident and competent.
Carbine Level II will build on the fundamentals that you learned in Level I and move you toward to goal of increased accuracy on multiple targets with multiple rounds and add in how to handle malfunctions and various ranges and shooting positions. We will also begin your Close Quarters Battle shooting skills at mid-to short range and focused on fast first-round hits - lots of fun.
This will set you up for Carbine Level III where we get to more fundamental tactical shooting from the ready position, timed drills, barrier work, shooting from your "other strong side" and shooting on the move. We will also work into the steel targets and competition with other students to get that heart rate up.
These three short skills development courses will pave the way to your success in integrating your rifle/carbine work into a tactical scenario and the Tactical Pistol/Carbine Course or the Fighting Carbine Course.

I am proud to announce that Kelly V., of Criterion Tactical, will be joining our instructional team at the PCST Range Facility. Kelly is a true American Hero and has forgotten more about the art of the gun than most will ever dream about.
Watch for the upcoming training announcements and learn from Kelly's unique background and experience. We are crunching out the July and August training calendars as we speak.
We had a fast-paced weekend - the Grand Opening of the re-designed range on Saturday, and a Defensive Handgun Course on Sunday afternoon. I learned a lot from both!!
We had about twice as many folks as I anticipated for the Grand Opening, (the crowd estimator put attendance at over 200) but thanks to the diligence and professionalism of everyone working, and the patience of everyone in attendance, things went very smooth and very safe! I was surprised by friends that I hadn't seen in quite a while, and friends that I just met. Our local law enforcement neighbors came out from the Hays and Travis County Sherriff's Office, the Hays County Constable's Office, and the Austin Police Department.
We had a slew of Military Special Ops guys (most retired) in the crowd (one who came all the way from Qatar), and many more friends who wished us well from across the globe.
It is important to note that this weekend just could not have happened without a lot of work and a lot of Good Friends. Please use our local Texas businesses when you can, thank all of our Business Partners when you see them, and tell them that you ran into them at the PCST Range (we want them to come back out).
The obviously recognizable ones (and the most fun) were Jeremy and Chris from AR-15 Targets who brought a huge case of Select Fire (Full Auto) suppressed long guns as well as a lot of targets; Dave and Levi from The Silencer Shop who brought just as many different suppressed weapon varieties; and Sportsman's Finest who couldn't get out this time but did help us out with some extra ammo. These guys loaded up early, scrounged as much ammo as they could find, and came out from North Austin to be surprised by the overwhelming turn-out in Dripping Springs!
The not-so-obvious list of friends is much longer: Byron Lilly of Delta Commercial Contractors who hammered out limestone and shale from the side of the hill to deepen and widen the range, and hauled in fill dirt; Stephen Owens and the crew from Lehne Construction who leveled, drilled and pinned the cross-tie retaining walls and lots more; Tom and Linda Chennault from PDQ Embroidery (Tom is our Scoutmaster for Troop 101 here in Drip) who stayed up all night Friday making shirts and banana pudding; Scott Godwin who got bored one Saturday and came out to invest some sweat equity in the range; My neighbor Chad who didn't seem to mind that his Bobcat kept wandering about 500 yards to the east; Robin Bloomquist who made cobbler, cookies and is helping with our Web Advertising; the 80 Lb. Brain - Todd Sanders who designed and is running the web-site and is trying to bring me into the information age; Chet Miles who got up really early to serve up some great fajitas; Ron "Road Trip" who jumped in to perform Range Safety Officer (RSO)Duties;
The highest paid RSO, registration desk attendant and friend, my cousin Danny Griffith (A Delta Airlines Captain and Federal Flight Deck Officer); My neighbors Rob, Charlie, Matt, and Chad who endured what I am sure sounded like a high tempo sustained fire-fight on Saturday afternoon. My son Cole who "Volunteers" to help me all the time, is "on-call" with his VHF radio, runs errands back and forth, learned about the joys, pain and sweat of construction and hard work, parked cars, the list goes on and on and on - I couldn't and wouldn't want to do this without him; and most importantly, my wife Cisa who has endured me since 1984 (more than most sane people could stand), tolerates my shooting indulgences, and did hundreds of little things I would have overlooked to make the weekend work.
To all of these and those I missed - and all of you that came out - THANK YOU!
